Electronic Stability Control
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) estimates that about half of the fatal passenger vehicle crashes that occur each year involve a single vehicle. Furthermore, it estimates that if all passenger vehicles are equipped with stability control, the risk of involvement in these crashes will be reduced by more than 50 percent. With such clear benefits to safety, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) now requires vehicle stability control systems to be present on all cars, truck and busses weighing under 10000 pounds destined for the US market by the year 2012 and the European Commission has confirmed a similar proposal. Vehicle stability control is one of the major advancements in driver and passenger safety to be implemented since the inception of the modern automobile.
MEMSIC accelerometers are ideal for vehicle stability control systems. Millions of MEMSIC acceleration sensors have been utilized in vehicle stability control systems. The inherent immunity of the device to higher frequency acceleration and vibration provides the precise and reliable acceleration information needed for electronic vehicle stability control. Other MEMS accelerometers have a mechanical comb structure that has a resonant frequency in the 10 kHz to 20 kHz frequency range. If there is sufficient energy present near the resonant frequency of the mechanical comb structure, the sensor stops working properly and induces offset error. MEMSIC devices have no mechanical comb structure to resonate and the frequency response is a smooth repeatable low pass filter response enabling the highest performance vehicle stability control systems. Use the MEMSIC road-proven technology in your Electronic Stability Control system for success.

Roll Over Detection
Sport Utility Vehicles (SUV) and Pick-up trucks have a higher center of gravity than regular passenger cars. Their higher center of gravity makes them more susceptible to a roll over condition. In an effort to make them safer and protect the passengers in the event of a roll over, many OEMs use a roll detection system to deploy side airbags. A roll over event is much different than a crash event so an additional inertial sensor located in the vehicle is needed. For many roll detection systems the accelerometer is aligned normal to the earth.
MEMSIC XZ packaged accelerometers are great for roll-detection systems because they can be mounted directly on the PCB and normal to the Earth. This eliminates the need for a daughter board and associated costly manufacturing to mount the daughter board perpendicular to the mother board. Devices packaged in a XY configuration are also available.

Motorcycle Fall Over Detection
The necessity to keep up with emissions and fuel efficiency laws has caused a major change in internal combustion engines. Fuel injection has become the primary fuel delivery system having almost completely replaced carburetors since the late 1980s. In motorcycles this has created the need for a sensor to trigger a fuel shut off that has the rider抯 safety in mind.
Motorcycles used to utilize carburetors to supply fuel. The reaction to the motorbike flipping over and falling down was simple - the carburetor would stop supplying fuel which would then stop the engine. Today since carburetors have been changed to fuel injection system for better fuel consumption and improved the performance of motorcycle this simple shut off mechanism does not exist.
A fuel injector is nothing but an electronically controlled valve. It is supplied with pressurized fuel by the fuel pump in your vehicle, and it is capable of opening and closing many times per second. A fuel injection system requires a trigger for fuel shut-off. This can be done by detecting inclination of the motorcycle by using an accelerometer. This will then stop the engine should the motorcycle flip over or fall. MEMSIC offers accelerometers to detect inclination within the ECU of a motorcycle and the MCU will shut off the fuel injection system if it is under the preset threshold angle for a certain period of time.
Using MEMSIC抯 highly reliable accelerometers and working with the application engineering team, OEMs and users are able to determine optimal mounting strategies to enhance the response of the sensor.

Headlight Leveling
Advances in automotive headlight technology have enabled drivers to use brighter headlights providing better visibility at night and in foul weather conditions. Unfortunately, these brighter lights have created a significant hazard for oncoming traffic if they are not positioned at the correct angle at all times. If a bright beam is set at an adverse angle, the light has the capacity to momentarily blind any oncoming drivers. Vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlamps are required by ECE regulation 48 to be equipped with automatic beam leveling control to keep the light focused on the road and not into the eyes of oncoming drivers.
MEMSIC accelerometers are used to detect the angle of inclination of the vehicle providing the information necessary for the headlight leveling control system to keep the beam focused on the road. A low frequency response, minimal 0g drift over temperature, and vibration immunity are the keys to success in this application. MEMSIC devices designed for this application excel in these areas.

Vehicle Alarm
The first documented case of car theft was in 1896, only a decade after gas-powered cars were first introduced. From that early era to today, cars have been a natural target for thieves: they are valuable, reasonably easy to resell and they have a built-in getaway system. Some studies claim that a car gets broken into every 20 seconds in the United States alone.
MEMSIC's accelerometers are used for anti-theft car alarm systems to detect real time status/ position of a parked car. The accelerometer is a key part as they are able to detect any shock to the vehicle: If somebody hits, jostles or otherwise moves your car, the sensor sends a signal to the computer system indicating the intensity of the motion. Depending on the severity of the shock, the system signals a warning horn beep or sounds the full-scale alarm.

Vehicle Dashboard Compass
There are many accessories that you can add to your vehicle in order to make your life much easier. A dashboard/mirror compass is the perfect item to add because it not only allows you to view what is in the back of your car, but it keeps you informed about what direction you are travelling in. This is a great tool as many people do not know what direction to travel in but they know where they want to go.
With a dashboard/mirror compass, users only need to take a quick look up to their mirror, and know exactly what direction the car is traveling in. MEMSIC抯 magnetometer sensors are able to provide users with this compass function. By simply integrating these low cost, high accuracy sensor components, manufacturers are able to simply and easily provide their customers with directional information.
